As long as you are using dedicated memcached and an indexer for search like sphyx it can scale pretty well.

On Mac I've used hombrew http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/ then in terminal "brew isntall gcc" and maybe "brew install make" then navigate to the locale directory and just run "make" from the terminal, that should compile to .mo to .po

@yun You can put a grandfathered date in addPlugin('RequireValidatedEmail', array( 'grandfatherCutoff' => 'Sept 28, 2011'); So accounts that existed before you enabled the plugin won't get penalized.

@yun can you post from the accounts? Accounts will not be able to post until they validate their email and only one account can be validated per email address. (well, that's how it's supposed to work)

Not really, but in 1.0 you can set your account so that you need to authorize people to follow you which is kinda the same thing.
