"Private" in 1.0

Can anyone tell me what does "private" mode do (otherwise will figure it out eventually by testing :)

I.e. does it, on a public installation, mean any "private" notice will only be viewable by any logged-in user?

Is there any difference between its usage in open and (private) installations? We have our set to non-public, so would "private" have any function within that?

  • Does it mean that other users won't be able to see such notices in any streams, UNLESS they are subscribed to the user's stream?
  • @mathaba There are several different levels of private.
There is private for the site, which means that only logged in users can see the site.
When you are on the site, you can click the lock icon to make messages private to specific groups so that only members of the group can see the message (and you can specify per group if it is a private only group and you can also require administrator approval to join the group), and you can do the same for messages to users or groups of users.
You can also set your account so that only people that follow you can see your posts, and you must authorize followers.
  • That is wonderful and all understood... but what about when sending a general notice and marking it private? From my testing it is still visible even to those who are not subscribed and not moderators. Also, can moderators see those private messages that they would not normally see if they were not moderators? And, "same for messages to users or groups of users" you mean an @somebody message marked private, could not be seen by anyone other than that person in the timeline? Or even to @#family ?
  • BTW, I sent a notice marked private, to a group from the drop down box, and it is visible in the time line, and is NOT in the groups inbox, only in the time line?
  • It will be in the timeline of any users of that group, or at like site.tld/groups/yourgroup
  • OK on that... but you missed my questions from the post above :-)
  • General notices sent private have no effect in a private site because the default is "my colleagues at xxxx" If you have a public site, you can send a private message to "my colleagues at xxxx" which is the default, then only people with accounts can see the message.
Moderators should not be able to see the private messages (unless they are members of the groups etc) I believe it should work to @#family but I'm not sure it has been tested.
I think @somebody marked private should be private to that person.
Again, you should test these all out on your own install before you start sending critically private information around.
  • Just installed 1.0.0 and start exploring it . but its not clear to me also. what is the difference when you choose
    - site profile , to be [ private ], [ public ] , [ community ] ,[ single-user]
what are differences in above ?
  • Can you remote subscribe to other services, such as identi.ca when your status.net site is private? And visa-versa for users on identi.ca or twitter?

Also, is there a more elaborate description for what private, public, community, and single-user means? If not, can you provide documentation?
  • I have started a wiki article but it needs improving.

    http://status.net/wiki/Site_Privacy
  • @NickPfen, no you can't subscribe to other public site users and vice versa from a private site.
