When I post a basic message, should all the people that follow me get an email notification with the message?

No, an email notification is only sent if you mention someone with @username

Thank you for your response. Is there a way to modify this behavior or to request a feature? We had replaced present.ly with our own status.net configuration when present.ly converged with social spring and was no longer free to use.

@rwhite I don't think that's the intended way, since it probably would lead to a lot of emails to users (which would really bother me personally). But I think you might be able to modify the code. But I can't help you with this, I'm only a user.
